Environmental Permitting

A critical aspect of many environmental and civil design projects is permitting.  It provides the gateway to ensure that projects comply with Federal, state, and local laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.

The permitting process involves obtaining approvals from the various regulatory groups, which have jurisdiction over the proposed project.  It may also require participation in public meetings. Many permits require an understanding of the geological setting, impacts to groundwater, engineering controls, operating plans, and financial responsibility.

KEY’s projects typically involve obtaining permits for the following:

Environmental permits: For projects involving wetlands, waterways, or air quality, environmental permits ensure that the project is designed and constructed to minimize any environmental impacts.  These permits include NPDES, Permits-to Install, and Beneficial Use Determinations.  KEY can support permits for RCRA Hazardous Waste requirements such as storage, treatment, and disposal projects.

Land use permits: These permits are required for projects that involve changes to the use of land, such as new developments, subdivisions, or changes to zoning designations. Land use permits ensure that the project is consistent with local land use regulations and zoning ordinances.

Construction permits: These permits are required for all construction projects, and ensure that the construction is being done in compliance with the approved plans and specifications.  These will typically include building permits.

The permitting process can be complex and time-consuming, as each regulatory agency may have its own set of requirements and approval processes. It is important to work closely with the regulatory agencies and other stakeholders throughout the permitting process to ensure that the project is in compliance with all applicable regulations and permits can be obtained to meet project schedules and regulatory deadlines.

At KEY, we have extensive experience navigating the permitting process for Federal State and local requirements. Our team of  engineers and regulatory specialists can help you with all aspects of the permitting process, from initial applications to final approvals.
